Junk Food for our pets
It is true that in a world of increasingly overweight people we have correctly pointed the finger at the obsessive consumption of junk food. High calories and high fat, deep fried and battered, with no nutritional value, but damn it tastes good.
I have a cat Theo who was quite ill when he was younger with a urinary disease. I am sure many of you out there have experienced the same thing, along with the outrageous vet bill and the lifelong instruction to purchase and feed your cat special veterinary food. Thinking vets must know more than me I obediently fed my cat this expensive food for almost six years. Well what do you know, he got sick again. And not with a new illness, from the exact same thing. Hundreds of dollars later and a new expensive vet prescription my sister and I began questioning the integrity of processed cat food. If people can be eating the wrong food all the time because it tastes good, why not our pets? After all the pet industry is a billion dollar industry with vet hospitals not far behind. Perhaps they are working together? Ok maybe not a conspiracy theory but I am not completely convinced.
At first we entertained the idea of making our own cat food. We want our cats to live forever, we eat very healthy, and it seemed like the logical choice. After much research this was proving to be a lot of work, when lo and behold my sis found our pet food store run by charming hippies actually had a homemade, all natural, meat diet food for dogs and cats. Made with imported venison, antibiotic free, and hormone free with no cereal grains or fillers. But does it taste good?
It would seem that if a cat is hungry enough he will eat anything. Right? If you agree you have not met my eighteen year old cat fluffer. He is a cantakerous old grandfather cat who loved his McDonalds cat food diet. He is not happy with the change. While I keep telling myself this is for his own good and he will adjust is it clearly a battle of will. And I am weakening. In my quest to give my cats eternal life, am I starving my beloved old cat to death? The younger one is giving in slowly; I am sure by tomorrow he will be resigned to it. Meanwhile Fluffer glares at me and sits in his food spot, waiting for his Mccat patties filled with yummy fillers.
Wish me luck.
