The Atheist Tale
As assistant editor and writer I know the rules most site regarding overtly religious articles and ramblings, yet I question why? It is an idea that any discussion regarding religion will be to criticize one person's beliefs in favor of ones own. Hence not wanting to offend others makes this rule make perfect sense. But what if one just wants to talk about their belief or lack thereof? Is this considered offensive? And to whom? Does this mean that the atheist community is not aloud to speak, not against their religious counterparts and convictions, but about their individual beliefs? Why does Atheism have no voice, no power, and no electoral clout? If I were running for office could I do so as an atheist? My morals have been laid out before me for hundreds of years and have little to do with scripture. I do not wish to disprove the existence of God; which certainly does not mean that it stands on the proof that it exists. For me it absolutely does not.
I recently put "Jesus is a vegetarian" on my MSN which caused a bit of a debate with my "born again Christian" sister. Not a heated debate, not an angry debate, but one based on a book I do not believe in. This is just my take on the bible, but I mean if God and the Bible were true, word by word, fact by fact, then God is truly a homophobic, cruel, genocidal, evil, controlling, bullying and masochistic God, and unfortunately a lot of people do take the bible literally, whatever form of this bible, hence the violence today. I do not begrudge my sister believing in something that makes her life feel whole and spiritual, whatever works for her. My comments regarding Veganism are meant to make people see that it is cruel to kill, and if there were a god and jesus as we are meant to see them, this would be the case. Someone debating gods words with me are like me convincing you I was born in a tea pot and can live with no food. There is nothing wrong with critical thinking.
I however wish to be taken seriously as a non believer. I wish to be seen as a morally good person with a spiritual sense and belief system, regardless of whether I do or do not believe there is an all wise God living in the sky that will some day judge us and take us to heaven. I personally do not believe in a thing passed down to me by man, as I do not believe anything said by man, the very man who since the beginning of time has done nothing but judge and kill, and control words to his advantage.
If we lived our one life as it was meant to be lived, all of us being one in thought and intelligence, all hoping for a better world, believing in self over fiction, having compassion for life itself, not living in fear and behaving as though we were being monitored by some giant telescope in the sky, then we would truly know spiritual peace in my opinion, and all this self imposed cruelty on our fellow men would cease to exist. I am not afraid of some moral judgment in the afterlife, I do not believe in an afterlife per say, except perhaps the spirit and energy of our soul passing into the energy of the earth.
I do not believe in marriage, or any other ritual passed down by a church that exists for the betterment if itself. When I die I want poetry read by friends, and jazz playing and NO mention of anything religious, as it would betray what I truly believe in life.
I doubt this will ever happen; this virus has spread deep and wide, sits in power and controls our lives. So if I stand up and shout "I am an atheist", why the hell can't I. (no pun intended)
