My Obsessions
(by Carolina Smart)

I am constantly  obsessing on stuff. My past obsessions have been Jelly Beans (I will go through phases where I have insane cravings for them, of course now that I wrote this I need to get Jelly Beans), Marilyn Monroe (I am constantly buying books about her), raisins (I will buy organic health mix snacks and
spend an hour picking out the raisins.  I cannot stand them.  My mother made me sick of them, when I was a child.  Not to mention they look like dead flies).  I will hunt forever to find a specific piece of clothing, purse or shoes.  I once went to every bloody purse store in Toronto to find a specific purse.  (I still haven't found it)

So...what is my point you ask.  I am going to share my obsessions with you via on online obsession log.  You are all soooooooo lucky! Enjoy!!!

The Perfect Martini Diet - I cannot wait for this book to be released. It sounds hysterical!!! Here is what Amazon.ca wrote about it. And yes... I am obsessing on Amazon.ca.

Book Description
There's a yet another new Harvard study out that shows that regular moderate drinking can lower your risk of heart attack. This study, which followed 40,000 men for twelve years, found out that those who drank one or two alcoholic drinks 5 to 7 days a week lowered their risk of heart attack 30 percent. (Women also benefit but they must weigh those benefits against the risk of breast cancer. Still, far more women die of heart disease than breast cancer.) Similar studies show that caffeine is good for you, as is red meat and salmon and red wine and anything dipped in olive oil.

The truth is, good food and drink is good for you. So why deprive yourself? Think of the most self-indulgent people you know the ones who never miss their morning lattes and their evening martinis, dine at the best restaurants, hire personal trainers, indulge in weekly massages and facials. Odds are they're as thin as they are spoiled. This book will uncover the reasons why some of the most indulgent people are also the healthiest (like the French Paradox, which explored why French people can eat so much rich food and drink so much wine and still be thin and have low rates of heart disease).

So spoil yourself thin with The Martini Diet. Inside you'll find all the ways in which you can indulge yourself and get into shape at the same time. Not only will you live longer, you'll have a heck of a lot more fun.

The Changeling - Whoally crap! This movie still creeps me out. I finally bought this wonderfully scary Canadian horror classic. George C Scott stars. Here is what Amazon.ca has to say
When a recent widower (the wonderfully overemphatic George C. Scott ) moves into an antique Washington mansion, his realization that he may not be the only resident leads him toward a deadly secret that refuses to remain buried....The best haunted-house film since the legendary Haunting, this potent, classy combination of the mystery and horror genres eschews explicit gore and dumb shocks in exchange for a subtle creepiness that occasionally builds to a terrifying peak (watch out for that seance scene!). The result is a satisfyingly intelligent horror film with an intriguing dash of Watergate-era paranoia. Director Peter Medak.

The bathtub scene and the well scene still get to me!!!

I have three new obsessions in my life. Eve L, Tshirthell.com and trying to find jeans that don’t show my crotch.

Eve L is a character created by the genius creators of David and Goliath T’s. David and Goliath T’s are the new Emily. I have a particular favourite Eve L. It is the "you laugh at me T" . I can relate. Check out their website, it is loaded with groovy stuff and tonnes of fun stuff to do. You will have to be able to enjoy sick humour though. The sicker the better I say. That brings me to tshirthell.com. Gotta warn you ahead of time, some of the humour is beyond warped! Check them out anyway.

I know low rise it the in thing for pants. I have no problem with low rise. I have lost enough weight that I can wear them without having those unsightly rolls showing. I find low rise pants sexy. I have recently acquired several pair of them. As a gift to myself, for losing weight, I though I would get pair of jeans. A nice, sexy, low rise pair. The only problem is, every single pair I have tried on, somewhere around 25 of them, is super extra low rise. My crotch is showing. That’s not sexy! It is just sleazy. Christina and Brittney might be able to get away with their crotch showing. I cannot! If anyone out there knows where to find low rise jeans in Toronto, that don’t show off my personal space, please let me know!

August 24, 2003 - Mad TV has become one of my favourite shows. It is on late at night, which is perfect for me as I am up all hours of the night working. When I am getting frustrated and need a break, Mad TV is exactly what I need. Each time I watch it I look forward to seeing my favourite skits. My all time favourite is Stewart. Michael McDonald and Mo Collins portrait of Steward and his ditzy mother are beyond hysterical.

My favourite cast member is Stephanie Weir. Teen Doctor always has me on the floor and Anna Nicole Smith is so convincing it is frightening!

I really miss Mrs. Swan’s "He looka like a man." I really wish they would bring her back!!! Want a good laugh.

Watch Mad TV. It dares to go where SNL hasn’t went in about 20 years.

August 3, 2003 – This is a little scary, I am actually putting an entry into my obsessions two weeks in a row. We had better check to make sure the sky isn’t falling.

Carnivorous Plants – I have been obsessed with carnivorous plants since I was a child. My Grandma Carrie introduced me to them. When I was a child I always spent a few weeks with my Grandparents. I use to love helping out in the store and playing with the Venus Fly-Traps. My grandmother had them in every one of her window. I would spend hours watching them catch and digest house flies. A bit of a sick way to spend time, but, we were in the middle of cottage country and the plants were more interesting than the tourists. Since then I have always wanted a Venus Fly-Trap and today I finally got my wish. I bought my very first one and have also started my collection of carnivorous plant. My wish list is to get a few more Fly-Traps and some pitcher plants. There are many kinds of pitcher plants. I currently have my eye on a Cobra Plant and an Asian Pitcher Plant. I have many window in which I can put them and there is never a shortage of house flies to feed them with. Just think, soon I will have my very own little shop of horrors.

Evanescence – there is something just eerie enough about this groups music that makes me like them. I am not usually into poppish sounding music, but this group has caught my attention. I haven’t bought their CD yet. I haven’t made a trip to HMV recently. But next time I do I will be getting the CD. My favourite song right now is Bring Me To Life.

July 27th - It’s been a while since I last wrote about my obsessions. It isn’t that I haven’t been obsessing, ‘cause trust me…I have.

I am not sure if it is the actual Hickory Sticks that I am obsessed with or if it is the salt that I am addicted to. I have been on a hickory stick binge for this past month. I have tried desperately to cut junk food out of my diet, but for some reason I keep getting these mad cravings for Hickory Sticks and I cannot help myself. I am not sure if these are available anywhere other than Canada (it is a Canadian company called Hostess), but are like mini dried out French fries with a smoky hickory taste. If you get a chance you have to try them, but don’t blame me if you get addicted. It’s not my fault!

Caboodles make up is a cool make up line I have recently got into. I don’t normally go for glittery make up. I wear contacts and my eyes end up getting irritated, but this stuff doesn’t do that. You have to check this line out. The packaging is really hip and unique and the names and colours are groovy

I haven’t owned a proper bathing suit in many years. The only time I have been able to go swimming in the past few years has been when I went up north to my parent’s house. Even then I usually went in a tank and pair of shorts. I decided it was time for a real bathing suit, however, that changed very quickly! If they weren’t bikinis or cut up to my armpits I wouldn’t have such a problem. It has been a very difficult search. I finally found a bathing suit I liked but then I discovered that is was $78. Why the hell would I pay that much for a piece of material that barely covers my body! The search continues. I am afraid it will be snowing by the time I find one that I like and can afford.

You have to check out the purses at http://www.epitomegirl.com. These are awesome. They are handmade and each one is unique. Carrie is the designer and she is has some very clever idea’s. The t-shirts are very cool too. As soon as I have some extra cash, I will be buying myself one!!!

I continually rave about how much I love Edward Gorey. I have started a collection of his books. The other day I realized I still don’t have Dracula by Edward Gorey. It is a toy theatre with Dracula characters of Mr. Gorey’s design. Once I get it I know I will have hours of fun!!! Now if I could just get someone to buy it for me!

Sandman Endless NightsNeil Gaiman I cannot wait to get my hands on this. It looks absolutely amazing. Neil Gaiman never ceases to amaze me with his talent and imagination! I am still working on getting the completed set of Sandman. I am still missing a few issues, but I won’t be waiting to get those before I read this.

May 3rd, 2003 I am officially back on my Charles Addams kick. I love this man! He has a dark creativity that I and many other lovers of the genre respect.

For those who also love Charles Addams, here is some trivia:

~Charles was born in 1912 and passed away in 1988
~As a child he enjoyed wandering through cemetaries. Something I love to do on a regular basis.
~The year the first Addams family cartoon appeared was 1937. Mortia and Lurch were the first characters to be shown.
~Did you know that the Addams Family mansion was inspired by this house?
~The original series ran from 1964 to 1966, but due to re-runs has never been off the air.
~In 1973 Hanna and Barbera produced the cartoon version of the Addams family. Do you know who did Pugsley's voice? None other than Jodie Foster.
~The 1991 movie version, starring Angelica Huston, Raul Julia and Christina Ricci, grossed over 100 million dollars.
~In 1992 Hanna Barbera produced the 2nd cartoon version of the Addams family.
~ In New York, at the main branch of the New York Public Library at 42nd street and 5th Avenue, there is the Charles Addams Gallery located on the third floor.

Books written by Charles Addams:
~Black Maria
~Favorite Haunts,
~The Groaning Board,
~Nightcrawlers,
~Creature Comforts,
~The Charles Addams Mother Goose,
~The Scarce Dear Dead Days,
~Afternoon in the Attic

Has it really almost been a month since I last obsessed on something? That's not right!

Lara Croft - The Cradle of Life TR2 - July 25th, 2003. You can catch me in line to see the much anticipated sequel to Lara Croft: Tomb Raider . Soon, very soon I once again get to see my second most favourite fictional character (Neil Gaiman's Death is first), played by my favourite actress. Ok, she is tied with Christina Ricci, but really who is counting. The anticipation of the new movie will hopefully take my mind off the fact their are only 5 episodes of Buffy left.

Nowhere Girl - I have found this amazing online comic called Nowhere Girl. The story begins with a young woman preparing to commit suicide and saying her good byes. As the story progresses we see a glimpse of why her life has come to this awful turn and what changes her path. The comic art and web-site design are dark and emotional. This comic and artist (Jessica Shaw) are kick ass! I was only able to read part one, but plan on going back tonight to finish checking out the site. I suggest you all do the same. Jessica is very talented and rumour has it Neil Gaiman thinks she is fabulous.

Neil Gaiman's Journals - Speaking of Neil Gaiman. Have I mentioned I love him! I have been a huge fan of Gaiman since I can remember. Death is still one of my all time favourite fictional characters. I recently started reading Neil's online journal. Last night I actually had to force myself to turn the MAC off and go to sleep. I couldn't tear myself away from it. The man is a genius. GENIUS! Anyone who is a fan of Neil's, comic books and novels has to check out Neil's journals. Of course I cannot be held responsible if anyone else becomes obsessed with them. You have been warned.

March 8, 2003 -

My Cool New Phone – Last week I had to buy a new cell phone. My other phone’s battery wasn’t holding a charge anymore. The cost of buying a new battery wasn’t much cheaper than buying a new phone. For sometime now I have wanted a flip phone. I had my eye on the LG TM520 silver flip phone. It is a very small and alien looking phone. I had to have it. Last Friday I bought it. I spent a few hours playing with the new features, inputting my phone numbers, and playing with the voice activation. I love my new phone. But, and there is always a but. The ringers SUCKED! For quite sometime I was jealous of Sarrah’s cool ring on her cell phone. I was very disappointed with my rings, then I discovered I could download all kinds of rings for my phone. I downloaded the theme to the Addam’s Family, Batman and Knight Rider and the songs Whip It by Devo and Ina Gadda Da Vida by Black Sabbath. Suddenly my phone has become the coolest phone in the universe. Cooler than Sarrah’s phone. That of course is not why I bought it. I needed a new phone, I just lucked out that it is so cool!!!
