TV or Not TV

No TV?
Egaads! What has this world come to... you have no TV!
Where is your TV?
How can you stand not having a TV?
Something is missing in here. Wait... you don't have a TV?
Wow, I'd go crazy without a TV.
Shouldn't there be a TV there?

Addictions.... Drug, Cigarettes, Booze, Sex, Food, TELEVISION! I don't have a television. In the last two and a half weeks, every time someone comes into my apartment the first thing they notice is the fact that I don't have a TV. I also don't have any curtains or pictures on the wall but they are all oblivious to that. Instead they focal point is the spot in my living room where a Television would normally go.

Boobtube
Brain drain
Noisebox

I am on the fence about whether or not I want one in my home. Sarrah is going to lend me hers, I've had ample opportunity to go and retrieve it from her storage, but it never happens. If I get it, I get it, if I don't... I'm not going to be too upset. The only reason I would ever use it is to watch my DVD's. I would never order cable, it's a waste of energy and money. I calculated it and if I had cable, I would only watch around 5 hours a month. If I was incredibly bored I may watch CSI. Not worth the bother or the money, since I can rent the DVD's. If I had the itch to watch a DVD I could view it on my laptop or go to a friend’s house.

I've asked around to find out what the big deal is with having a TV. For each answer I have my own solution.

Background noise - I play music. I have a friend who first thing she does when she gets home is turn on the TV and first thing she does when she gets up in the morning as well.  She was shocked when she would come home and I didn't have it on.
To watch their shows - if I wanted to watch a series, I can rent it
To check the weather - it's on the internet
To check the news - I boycott the international news and the local new is on... the internet
Boredom - I don't have time to be bored, writing two books, website, and I have life!
It's always been there - I grew up with a TV that had 3 channels... went through all of college and then some with no television. The only reason I really started to watch was one of my roommates had one. I bought a TV when hers broke, it moved from place to place with me and had it for 18 years............ when I moved this time, I left it behind. In the last two year I rarely watched television so what was the point.
I can't live without it - GET A LIFE!

I also have to say that there isn't anything on television any longer that would interest me anyway. Hollywood has lost its creative edge. I mean come on, did you have to redo the Bionic Woman!

The other thing I notice is when I sit in people’s living rooms they ask me if I want them to turn the TV on. I always say no thank you. I would rather have a conversation than sit in silence and watch mindless noise. That seems to be a huge problem. People invite you over to watch TV. We seem to have lost the art of conversation. Proof of this is people at work look at me like I have two heads when they ask me did you see such and such a show and I say no... don't watch TV...... Much of their conversations revolve around either the weather or what was on ‘The Tube’ last night. I can’t imagine going home, eating and then spending the rest of my evening watching television. I have way too many other things to do.

Oh... and I don’t own a microwave either... apparently the mothership to planet freakazoid will be coming for me soon....

I can live without it.. can you?  Can you go 1 week or even a month without turning it on? I would like to pose a challenge. Go one week without your TV and your microwave. Then report back to me.
