Crappy Food Nation
I'm doing a ten day juice fast right now and am inching towards the final days. It's been pretty smooth sailing so far, aside from caffeine withdrawal and the occasional hunger pangs. I also seem to be very sensitive to smell, especially the smell of cooking and am finding it very difficult to be around people eating. Something I have also noticed, and I never seemed to have noticed till I started the fast, THERE IS FOOD EVERYWHERE. On TV, on newspaper covers, magazines, on the subway (everyone seems to eat on the subway), on the ground and the people I work with eat non-stop, all day. Everywhere I go, everything I read, everything I see, there is FOOD. I don't think I would be so bothered or disturbed by this if it was at least healthy food. But it's not.
Everything is about fast food, processed food, how to make dinner in under 20 minutes and if I see one more McDonald's commercial I may go postal. It's all crap! Every last bit of it! I complain sometimes that it takes too long for me to make my meals, since I make them from scratch, but now after having this realization or rather awakening, I appreciate it. Not only do I know what I am putting in the food, I know it's healthy.
You would also think with all the food scares out there right now, such as the E-coli in pre-packaged Spinach, that people would take notice and reconsider convenience food. I mean, do you really know where the patty from that McDonald's hamburger is coming from, or if it was dropped on floor prior to being plopped on the grill? What about those pickles, how long have they really been sitting in that pail? I also often wonder how long the salad has been sitting in the 'salad bar'. Do they really put fresh product out every day? Of course they don't. I use to work in a restaurant with a salad bar and know for a fact it all gets 'reused'.
If this alone isn't enough to turn you off 'convenience food' I don't know what will. People need to go back to the way we cooked prior to the 1900's. Rarely do you read about E-coli outbreaks, cancer, heart disease or any other food related diseases from before that time. Yes, these illnesses are all food related. Scientists have been tying back our 20th/21st century diets to the cause of many of these diseases. Unfortunately they don't bother to release many of their findings because the medical profession would be screwed. If we all stopped eating crap and starting making all our meals from scratch with wholesome ingredients, we would prolong our lives and put many of these evil fast food/processed food chains out of business. Plus we should be going to local restaurants that do make the food from scratch. We are giving our hard earned dollars to the wrong people!
Changing the way we eat just doesn't have health benefits. You would also be helping the environment, giving money back to the farmers (who deserve it) and helping independent grocers and restaurants thrive. So do yourself a favour, stop eating fast food and processed food, start caring about what kinds of food go in your bodies and do something for Mother Earth!
