Every
single time I sit down to do an interview, and I've probably
done hundreds for sure, there's a certain amount of sweat
escaping from my pores. Sure I've done my homework, I mean
most of the time I know the person I'm talking to because
hey-they're-a-superstar. And if not, and it's a local talent
who I've yet to make the acquaintance, then I've read up on
this burgeoning artist so I know who they are. Yet, I'm nervous,
nervous about making a good impression. I want this actor
or director or musician to THINK I know my stuff, this way
I've got control. Kind of like when you hop on a horse for
the first time, they can take you for a ride because old black
beauty knows you have no idea what you are doing! I also need
my interviewee to feel relaxed so we can have a good time.
A
good time is the key to a good interview in a way. The other
day I talked to Mandy Moore and her Chasing Liberty co-star
Matthew Good (no, not that Matthew Good) and I was standing
with them and they both had their arms crossed the way people
do when they are feeling protective or on guard. This is not
good body language for the beginning of an interview, yet
it is common. After a few minutes and when they realized I'd
seen the movie, and that Im on their side, they relaxed
and we had fun.
I
also have nerves from the rare yet occasional "black
out". This is exactly as it sounds. I am engaged in conversation
with, let's say Michael Caine, things are going well and Im
mentally running through the few short questions Ive
prepared. Then when Mr. Caine finishes his answer, I inhale
with a big smile (Im always smiling) and in a nano-second
I forget everything I am about to say and I mean everything.
My mind races ... what was my next question? What's the name
of his movie? Who is this person? That's when I gracefully
repeat his last sentence, like I'm putting it to memory, and
reach far into my brain for one of those not-so-clever questions
that will do in a pinch. "And what inspired you to make
this movie".... Whew, that was a close one.
And
finally, the reason I keep deodorant in my drawer, along with
hairspray and powder, is, for some insane reason, I want this
to be "my best interview ever". I want to get the
scoop ... even though in the world of entertainment there
is rarely a scoop to be had. Yet I imagine ... Liz's uncovers
the real reason Rex Harrignton is retiring ... Walter Ostanek
shares with Liz why he's always the bridesmaid and rarely
the bride? Liz uncovers the weirdness behind the Wiggles!
Liz makes Gene Simmons cry?
