Love on the Internet

Love on the Internet: Should you or shouldn't you?
(by Sarrah Young)

At 29, Janice was ready to settle down and start thinking about having children. Despite her best efforts though, she was still single. Then one day, a friend jokingly told her to check the internet for her perfect man. She did, and now, three years later, they are married and have a little boy.
'I didn't really think it was a good idea at the time,' said Janice. 'My friends all told me to be careful and not to give out personal information. But after meeting Brad on the internet, I threw caution to the wind and flew out to meet him. And six months later we were married.'
For Janice, finding her husband on the internet wasnôt as scary as it could have been. She is one of the lucky ones. Dating is terrifying at the best of times, however when you are communicating via the net you can remain anonymous until you feel comfortable. Or at least, that's how it's supposed to work.

Tom had been communicating with a woman from another state for months and when she suggested they meet, he declined. 'I just didn't feel comfortable with meeting her yet,' Tom said. 'When I spoke to her later, she said she knew where I lived and worked and that she'd see me soon. I didn't think anything of it until she showed up at my work. All the guys were making jokes, but it was scary. I finally had to move because she wouldn't leave me alone.'
Tom still complains of insomnia and a heightened sense of paranoia due to his experience. He is not alone with his feelings, and a study done shows more people are becoming wary of using the internet for dating. Although wary, there will always be those who find the concept of internet dating exciting. Of course, those are the same people who watch Jerry Springer and eat hospital food. So we will ignore them, and continue to do things the way we have always done them- dating with one eye closed and one hand on your gun.
