Don’t Get in the Way of a Petty Hustler.

It’s been another successful year working at the Molson INDY. The weather has hot, the customers were friendly and the beer was flowing. Being my second year serving beer in the same beer garden, I ran in to a lot of people from the past. Surprisingly enough, most of them remembered my name.

Yes indeed! It was grand and like last year I couldn’t beat the heat. Hot summer days and hot cement equals heat stroke, which I ended up struggling with on Saturday, but I didn’t let that get me down knowing that Sunday was the ‘Big Race Day’ and would be the busiest out of the entire weekend.

Just to let you know, when you work at event like this one in particular, all the staff hired on are from different industries, so not everyone knows each other. Last year, I wanted to make tons of cash, so I worked my hardest to push as much beer as I could. Let me boast, it was a complete success. However, not everyone liked the fact that I was such a huge success. For example, the other servers! This year was kind of the same, except I worked with one girl named Kathy, who was very friendly. Throughout the entire weekend, every time we passed each other we’d share a smile or high five and everything was dandy, until Sunday.

On Friday (the first day of the INDY), the entire beer garden staff for my section met each other, which included, the cashier, the beer pourers and the stocking crew. Everyone was really happy with their positions, except this one chick, let’s call her Heather. Heather was upset because she found out that she wasn’t going to be serving for the weekend. She was pouring the server’s beer instead. So, during the days the first two days, she was slow and rude. Come Sunday, one of our servers had to cancel because unlike me, she didn’t recuperate from heat stroke. Heather was then brought on to help us serve. I had no problem with it and I was glad that she was getting the chance to make some extra cash. Let me write this again leaving out the rest of the sentence… I wasglad because this lil’ witch went off on me.

Sorry. I know it’s never good to get mad at others for their own behaviour because you should never let anyone get to you, but I tried. I noticed the way she was being and I tried to completely ignore it. But, there was a time during the day where I had had enough. It was when I went up to gather more beer for my tray. Heather and I ended up going for the same cup. She snatched it away from me and said.

"This beer’s mine. You’ve sold the most cases this weekend and I need to catch up!"

Whoa, okay there lil’ miss take it. It’s yours. Was she jealous? I don’t know. You see, to me. This weekend was free money. I look at it like this. I could have worked it or not. It would have been absolutely retarded to turn it down, but you see my point.

So, for the rest of the day, I stayed away from her, letting her take the back corner of the garden, while I stayed at the front. And if wasn’t for Kathy, I would have probably let Heather bother me a lot more than she already had. I couldn’t help thinking, why can’t Heather be more like Kathy? Throughout the rest of the day, I smiled at her and said, "Cheers for more beers!"

*Moral of the story, jealousy gets you nowhere and it also gets someone bytching about you on a website.
