Celebrity Treatment by Carolina Smart

 JLO and Ben...
Is anyone else out there as sick as I am of hearing about these two? If there are two celebrities who are lapping up the publicity it is these two. The media is also taking full advantage of it. Does anyone really care that Ben went to see a stripper. Last time I checked he wasn't the only male on the planet that did so. Between J Lo and Ben and Demi and Ashton I have stopped reading Entertainment magazines. I am not going to pay $6 to only read about them. The four of them should get a room already. One of the greatest actresses of our time passed away recently and only ended up on a few covers. Some them as a side bar to make way for Demi and her boy toy. The media needs to move on already. Enough is enough.

I almost got ran over by a newscaster.

I almost got ran over by a newscaster, literally.  I spend alot of time in the Queen street district.  One day last week, as I was walking past a TV station, a newscaster came barreling out of the side of the building and nearly knocked me over.  She wasn't watching were she was going, she was in too much of a hurry to get nowhere fast and apparently, I was in the way.  She didn't apologize, instead she turned and glared at me, as if it was my fault.  Ya right!  Get over your self already!  Just because you do the news doesn't make it ok for you to be rude!!!

Instant Celebrity!

I actually had to wait a few days before I wrote this because I was so angry.  I am sure by now that anyone who lives in the Toronto area knows about the shaky lady.  For those who don't, this is an elderly lady who sat at the corner of Yonge and Bloor or Bay and Bloor and begged for money.  She recently became an instant celebrity when she was found out.  She would beg for money stating that she was ill and if you gave her money she would pray for you.  Turns out, though the hard work of a reporter (and some bruises when the shaky lady and her son beat him up), that it was all a scam.  The lady ain't sick and she doesn't need to beg.  She lives in a nicer apartment than I do and she makes more money in a week, than I do in a month and I have a full time day job and a part time job trying to start a business.

This isn't what made me upset, what made me upset was the fact that she sucked me in, she made me feel sorry for her,  I even let my step-sons give her money, because they felt bad for her.  I still remember walking past her on cold winter days wondering if she had somewhere warm to go to and how could someone dump and elderly lady on the streets.  Turns out she had a very nice and warm place to go to and a family that looked after her.  Because of this scam artist, people who are living on the street are going to suffer.  They aren't going to get their next meal, through begging, as easy as they could before.  I just hope that anger is not taken out on other beggers because of the selfishness of one shaky lady.

Simpson's Day?

One of my absolute favorite TV shows is the Simpsons (listed behind Angel and Buffy, but, before the X-Files).  I think Matt Groening is Brilliant.  On February 17th episode the Simpsons come to Toronto (a little disappointed that it was only a whopping 5 minutes of the episode).  The producers of the show had a brilliant idea.  As a promo for the show (and a good boost for Toronto tourism, I might add) they asked our Mayor to have Feb 17th as The Simpsons Day and give them a key to the city....and of course our Mayor's answer was  - NO, we don't do that for, for profit organizations.  Umm.... correct me if I am wrong, but, ....just before Christmas, didn't this same mayor give Jackie Chan a key to the city and declare it Jackie Chan Day!  Last time I checked Jackie Chan was and Actor, Producer and clothing designer and I am pretty sure (sarcastic tone here) that all of those things are FOR PROFIT!!!  So, what makes Jackie so special?,  Of course you do have to remember that this is the same mayor who made a racial comment during a time when we were being assessed to see if our city would host the Olympics, went out of his way to welcome the Hell's Angels to our city and them pissed them off by throwing out a t-shirt they gave him as a gift.  IN FRONT OF THE MEDIA!!! Then he proceeds to say that he doesn't know what the Hell's Angels are all about (apparently he has been living in a closet up until now).  And....then there are all of his other very lengthy indiscretions.  (I won't go into that right now)  So, why is it OK for one for profit organization to get a key and a day and not another.  This makes no sense to me at all!!!

I HAVE SPOKEN!!!

Is she or isn't she???

Why is it when a celebrities sexual preference comes into question, it is front line news.  Who Cares!  I don't mean that in a bad way at all.  What I am trying to say is why is this so important?  Why should it make any difference regarding the type of person you are?  If you are a good person yesterday and today you let people know you are gay, wouldn't you still be a good person?  Being gay shouldn't change what people think of you.  EVER!!!  I really feel for Rosie O'Donnell right now.  the women has a great career and children and now her life is in turmoil because the media has decided blabbing her sexual preference to the public was a good story.  I don't think it is anyone's business is she is gay or not.  It is her business and her business only.  We do not have any right to know that part of her life.  I am not saying she should be ashamed of being gay.  She should stand up tall and be proud of who she is.  It shouldn't matter in any way shape or form.  What matters is what kind of a person she is inside and from what I can tell.  She is a pretty damn decent one!  She helps out a large number of charities and has not only adopted children, but she looks after a foster child.  She has a big heart!!! and that is all that should matter.

I HAVE SPOKEN!!!

Are they Royalty Now?

I cannot help but bytch about this one.  My family heritage is Scottish/Irish Celtic.  I am very proud of this. So today when I heard that Scotland, as a 1 year wedding anniversary gift, gave Madonna her own tartan, WHAT THE F**K!  I was furious.  The last person on earth who should get her own Tartan is Madonna.  First of all she isn't Scottish and marrying someone who is, well, doesn't make you Scottish, Secondly,  WHAT THE F**K.  I can name about a thousand people who really deserve their own tartan.  People who have died in the name of Scotland for instance!  People who worked to make Scotland

the country it is today.  Just because she has a bazillion dollars, is the most famous woman on the planet and got married in Scotland...doesn't add up to her own tartan. My ancestors (William Smart to be exact) stood shoulder to shoulder with Rob Roy and fought to make Scotland independent.  Guess what, we don't have our own tartan,  we share with the McKenzie's, as do a few other clans.  Here's a proposal for Scotland, why not give each individual Scottish family their own tartans first.  Then if you have some left over, lavish people like Madonna.  As the saying goes, take care of your own before you worry about others.  My family always comes first!!!

Going out of their way?

Ok,  I really have to bytch about this.  I am getting a little fed up with the way celebrities are treated like royalty and the rest of us like dirt.  Case in point.  A certain blonde(?) female celebrity is in my city (Toronto) shooting a movie.  She went into an upscale store in Yorkville and was asked to leave because she had a coffee with her.  Once the owners found out who she was, they sent her an apology and a coffee gift basket.  If it had been me who was in the store with a coffee, (if I would have even been acknowledged), I would have been rudely escorted from the store and most likely, spit on, on my way out.  This same actress, was recently driving down (in her very expensive SUV) a downtown street when she spotted a homeless person, she pulled over and gave the person a hot meal and her gloves, BIG F**KING Deal!!!!

Please don't judge me for what I am about to write here, because I am mot looking for anything by saying this, but, for over 2 year period of time I helped a homeless person (he passed away shortly after last Christmas).  The gentleman and his dog sat @ the corner near my building.  He was a very nice person, but due to circumstances he ended up on the street with his dog.  This man made sure his dog ate first, and that she was always warm (either having a friend take her in when it got too cold, or by giving her all of his blankets and occasionally his coat), because of this my heart went out to him and I continually gave him food, clothes, blankets and yes, MITTENS, when he needed it.  Bringing me to my point.  People who help people, like the man I talked about above should be the ones getting headlines.  Not the actress who makes millions just to look pretty.  The majority of people helping out at shelters, out of the cold programs and the get off the streets programs, make next to nothing money wise.  The do it out of the goodness of their hearts, not for free publicity (or to try and clean their conscience).  Another example is this summer, a male celebrity gave mouth to mouth to a woman who passed out (we still haven't come to a conclusion is she had actually stopped breathing).

He made the front page of almost all of the city papers and then some.  WHO CARES!!!   Everyone day regular people save lives and only 1 out of every 10 actually make it to the paper.  I have to say, this needs to change.

Summing up, Celebrities make millions each time they make a movie.  Regular people are the ones who should be noticed when they do good deeds, not the celebrities trying to get free publicity.

If I hear about one more celebrity who saved the day, I am going to scream.  So...I suggest you all buy some ear plugs, tie down your breakables (yes I scream loud) and write your comments below.  I will put them here!
